What to think about before selling internationally
- Product rules differ by country. Electrical products, children's products, cosmetics and food contact items often need country-specific testing and labelling — for example CE or UKCA marking in Europe and the UK, or FCC rules for electronics in the United States.
- Tax on cross-border sales. Many countries now require overseas sellers or marketplaces to collect GST or VAT on low-value imports, as Australia and New Zealand do.
- Shipping and returns. International shipping costs and return logistics can decide whether a product is viable abroad.
- Product content. Measurements, plug types, sizes and spelling should suit each market.
